Ten things the fitness industry sells you that are not true, and what the research actually says.
There is a lot of money in keeping you confused. Confused people buy fat burners, detox teas, waist trainers and twelve week programs that were never going to work.
Every myth in this guide is something widely believed, widely sold, and contradicted by published research. Each one names the study behind it so you can check it yourself.
A few of the ten
- You can target fat loss in one area. A 2021 review of 13 studies covering 1,100+ participants found training a specific area had no effect on the fat over it.
- It takes 21 days to build a habit. That number came from a 1960s plastic surgeon's observation, not a study. A 2024 review of 20 studies found a median of 59 to 66 days.
- Disciplined people resist temptation better. Researchers measured it and found the opposite.
Why this exists
Notice what almost every myth has in common. Each one either sells a shortcut that does not exist, or sets an expectation so wrong that people quit while things were actually working.
